Arleta Campbell (Shirey) - Class Of 1935

Arleta Lydia Campbell Shirey, 94, of Eastland, passed away Wednesday, January 25, 2012 in Eastland.  Services were held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, January 28, 2012 at the Daugherty St. Church of Christ with Larry Roberts officiating.  Burial followed in the Murray Cemetery in Carbon. 

She was born on October 18, 1917 in Carbon to Clyde Sanders and Dora Bell (Warren) Campbell.  She attended Carbon schools graduating form Carbon High School in 1935.  She married her high school sweetheart, Norris Shirey on December 26, 1939.  After living in Eastland for 3 years they moved to Clifton Arizona where they lived for nearly 38 years, before moving back to Eastland in 1979. 

She worked for several retail businesses as well as a jewelry store in Clifton, AZ for 17 years.  She enjoyed cooking and baking from scratch, especially angel food cakes, divinity candy and sour dough rolls.  She also enjoyed sewing, crocheting, quilting and growing flowers.  She had volunteered for nursing homes, three hospitals for 25 years and many community causes including catering for the Carbon Community Center for 8 years.  She was a member of the Pleasant Hill Home Demonstration Club.  She was baptized into the Church of Christ in the gin tank in Carbon, TX.  She enjoyed church work and had taught Sunday School classes for 52 years.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Norris in 1987, parents; 2 brothers, Blake Edward Campbell and Bernard Campbell; 1 sister, Bonnie Ruth Pierce; 1 niece, Glenna Ruth Warren; and a nephew, Clinton Pierce.

Survivors include 2 nieces, Brenda & Don Lane of Cisco and Bernadine and Richard Donovan of Herndon, VA; as well as lots of cousins, nieces, nephews, great-nieces and great-nephews.
